Cala terminates his contract at Sevilla, to sign for Cardiff City
by heathGCF | Posted on Saturday, February 1st, 2014
Cardiff City have captured the signing of central defender Juan Cala from Sevilla, after he and the club agreed to terminate the remaining months of his contract.
Cala24-year-old Juan Cala had stated a few days ago that he wouldn’t be renewing his contract with Sevilla, but had suggested he would remain with the Andaluz club until the end of the season.
According to previous reports, Cala then verbally agreed a move to fellow La Liga side Getafe, but that situation has now changed. Sevilla and the player have agreed an immediate termination of his contract and even though the transfer window has closed, technically a free agent, he has now agreed a move to Premier League side Cardiff City.
Cala is now heading to the Welsh capital, where he will complete his paperwork and link up with his new team, managed by former Manchester United star, Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The defender was actually named in the Sevilla squad to face Málaga at La Rosaleda on Saturday night, but his place will now be taken by another youth team product, Luismi.
Cala leaves Sevilla having made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, all of which were in the starting eleven, with 9 outings and 1 goal in La Liga, 2 in the Copa del Rey and 8 appearances in the qualifying round and group stage of the UEFA Europa Leage

I thought free agents could only move to the PL if their contract was terminated before the transfer window closed.....

The sneaky b*sterd! Says he won't sign anyone, then says he might. Nothing happens by deadline day but then he signs a free agent the day after! I think OGS must love screwing with us...

According to OSG in his Post Match meeting with media, nothing has been signed yet. Maybe they want to have a good look at him first.

Newcastle were eyeing him towards the start of the window as backup for their first team pairing. In terms of how good he is, I cant find anything of note video-wise, but its much harder to judge a defender by video than it is an attacker anyway.
Will be a bit of a mystery whether he is Turners replacement or purely a backup, but hopefully its the former. He was at the game yesterday by the way, spotted in the crowd. Signing is merely a formality.

The Sevilla website has an English version and from a quick look-see, he seems to have played most of the games this season for a side that is 7th in La Liga and through to the next round of the Europa League.
Seems reassuring.
Although they were thrashed 7-3 by Real Madrid.

He's also rumoured to be very worried about getting replaced in the Sevilla lineup, which is why he refused his contract renewal and moved clubs. Not an established reason, but to act the way he did in cancelling his contract was very intriguing...
