Although there is no room for sentiment at a PL club, I do feel sorry for Craig Conway..............
He has been a model of professionalism in his time at City and twice battled back into the team, firstly after a bad injury and then after having his transfer request turned down, as he was deemed "a valued member of the squad".
He contributed significantly to the promotion efforts in both seasons, scoring vital goals and putting in many unglamorous shifts, which mainly involved reinforcing the vulnerable fullback positions on both sides of the park.
Having been urged to stay and help the cause last year, I hope now that Malky will allow him to go out on loan and get into the shop window, as he deserves to be playing for a decent Championship side.
If he finds a club, I also hope that City release him without a fee in January in recognition of the part he played in City's rise from the ashes of Dave Jones' reign.

yes do feel for the guys left out and i hope it works out for them
At the end of the day, as sad as it is, Conway is, at best, a championship-level player*
Although I agree he has worked very hard for the club over the last season and I hope Malky does the right thing by him

Although i feel sorry for Conway i think Malky might have actually done him a favour. I doubt if Craig feels that way at the moment though.
It seems to me that it was probably between Conway and Smith to miss out. Smith has got the place in the 25 but just how many minutes is he likely to play this season? Time will tell as the season wears on and injuries kick in but at the moment neither Smith or Conway are even getting onto the bench.
Smith is 33 and possibly quite happy to wait in the wings for his oppertunities in what might be a final spell at Prem level. He has no international place to consider. Conway is 28 with more of his career ahead of him and a current place in the national team at risk.
While i am sure he would love the idea of getting a chance in the first team with us and hanging onto his place to play at Prem level the more realistic outcome is that he would spend weeks or months as a forgotten man of the 25 man squad lucky to find a place on the bench let alone any decent game time.
However dissapointed he is now i think a loan to a championship team and regular first team matches is the better option both for his club and international career.

Great summary toast, completely right that being stuck on the bench of a good team is far worse for your national team hopes than playing regularly for a poorer team. Unless you happen to be English, for some reasonToast Boy wrote:Although i feel sorry for Conway i think Malky might have actually done him a favour.
