Long recent car journey back from match, musing on recent outbreak of 1-0 victories in which City (yes Cardiff City!!!) can sit back and defend a lead in total confidence. Are organised at corners like a proper football team! Totally unprecedented.
So, who is the best defender you have seen at City and why? Interesting how many defenders we have sold up the table in recent years from Gabbidon on. Also had some iconic hard men centre halfs from Don Murray to Joe Dwyer to Darren Purse. Best one I have seen was probably Mike England playing his swansong season. Also some good full backs both defending and going forward but has there been a more effective unit than now? Good keeper and well organised defence.
Funnily enough, Bellamey is a key defender who sets the tone for chasing, harrying and so on.
Who is your favourire ever defender?

I never saw too much of Mike England playing for us, but he was a class player.
Brian Harris also came to us in the twilight of his career, but even so he was an awesome defender, so I'd probably put him as my favourite. With Murray and Dwyer not far behind. Hudson is also rapidly scaling the heights here.

I was a big fan of Glenn loovens - I his remember him being a brickwall, nothing could get through, over, under or around him. His only weakness that I remember is his lack of pace.

I have always liked the combo of brick wall and pace/skill - Jack Charlton and Bobby Moore. Yeah, Loovens gave the side confidence and you need skill alongside. For older readers a Martin Buchan, Colin Todd. Brian Harris was absolute class. One of City's greatest. I thought Gabbidon might have been that foil to the brick wall
Random thought - some great missed out central defenders who had other priorities - Bryan Robson and Alan Shearer

As with Tonker, it has to be Brian Harris for me, who funnily enough scored a rare goal for City in the match where Uwe Seeler broke all of our hearts........
From the same era, Don Murray

I was a fan of Leggy, he was a great full-back and seemed to love playing for Cardiff. Scott Young gave his all also and I'll never forget his goal against Leeds. As Rhys mentioned Glen Loovens was a good player, as was Roger Johnson for us on his day.

Defenders receive much less praise than than the glory boys up front, but 3 of my all time favourites (non-City) are Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Fernando Hierro.
The current partnership of Hudson and Turner takes some beating in terms of City defenders of the last 20 years or so. Although maybe Loovens and Johnson are pretty close.

Maldini best in my life time. Loovens and Johnson was true bedrock. Thought Johnson would really go on to top 6 team so why didn't he?
At City - often overlooked = Clive Charles. But, none of the guys in the past could match the pace and athleticism of the current team. Definite Malky influence of building from the back and one of many reasons I rate his management

Danny Malloy, what a hard man. Saw an article on him recently telling the story of how he chinned Brian Clough and was congratulated by some of Clough's 'Boro team mates after the match. Anyone on here remember him? (he has a book coming out this year).
