A thread about Population figures

For all Tan's hard work in promoting us in Malaysia, did you know that the country's population is only 29 million? That's two thirds the size of England. Not small by any means but I wonder if this Malaysian push by Tan is more about a patriotic national promoting his country rather developing a wider regional awareness of the club. I don't know enough about Asian culture to know of how buddy like those countries are. Does cracking Malaysia = cracking Asia?
Whilst looking at population numbers, I was surprised to find that the latest figures for the whole of Wales is 3 million.. with only 324,000 living in Cardiff. Comparing the city to Bristol, they have 428,000. Ashton gate is not exactly brimming with people.

But there are about a million people within a 40 mile radius of Cardiff ( not counting Swansea). That is the source of the club's great crowd potential. As for Asia I think Tan's mind is as much on China as it is on Malaysia.

Yeah I was about to say that the big difference is the catchment area. Very fee clubs, if any would have the catchments areas that Cardiff and even Swansea have.
Yes, but are we sure that is right? A third of wales? I've heard it banded around too, but I'm wondering if that is correct.
Just had a look and according the EU's count of Cardiff's Larger Urban Zone (defined a large city with a reasonable commuting distance) and we have the 79th biggest in Europe at 841,600. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larger_Urban_Zone
In reference to the rest of UK, Cardiff sit behind:
London (being the biggest in Europe)
Birmingham
Manchester
Glasgow
Leeds
Liverpool
Sheffield
Tyne and Wear
Bristol
Of all those cities, perhaps Cardiff is the most 'under exploited' in big football team terms.
However, there is something iffy about this 800,00 figure that we've all believed to be the catchment area that would awake the giant. But where exactly is this 800,000 figure come from?
Cardiff - 324,000
Newport (biggest town in Wales) - 116,143
Barry (Wales' next biggest town) - 47,863
rest of Vale of Glamorgan - 78,816
Total - 566,822
Not sure where the other 300,00 comes from? The only place I can think of that is big enough to fill that gap is Bristol (population 428,100).
Could it be that the source behind the figures is the EU with the EU including Bristol within the bracket of 'a reasonable commute' to Cardiff?
If it it is, well I'm not sure we can rely on our west country friends to provide us with much support - they are struggling for their own teams as it is.

Bridgend, Caerphilly, Maesteg.
Tbh I dont know how many people live in these places. But there are hundreds of little towns with a few hundred or thousand that all add up. Probably.

324,000 is a tiny number, i read somewhere once though that there are 400k+ people registered with gp's in cardiff so those figures may be wrong.
country with just 3 million people and we have 2 teams in the premier league, the best rugby team in europe and lots of other awesome stuff. proud

What you will notice is that all those places, with the exception of Leeds (who are always well supported), host at least two first class football teams, meaning, support is divided. The Cardiff cachement area has one team as Newport have only recently reemerged as a competitive force, and unless they achieve back to back promotions are unlikely to encroach on City's fanbase.
If success continues on the pitch we could continue to see growth in attendances for some time yet.

Saw something vaguely reliable recently...will search it out. Combined population of Cardiff & the Valleys 430,000, which I feel is the realistic catchment area for CCFC.
There are not many areas in the country with exclusive untapped access to such numbers.......which is why I think Tan will be happy to stay in South Wales.

Most of the missing 300k will made made up of Rhondda Cynon Taff, which has about 230k.

The latest population estimates I can find for local authorities I would regard as being in City's potential catchment area are:
Cardiff 338K
Bridgend 134K
Vale of Glam 125k
Rhondda Cynon Taff 236K
Merthyr 56K
Neath Port Talbot 137k
Caerphilly 174K
Torfaen 91K
Newport 142K
Blaenau Gwent 69K
Obviously we will be competing with Swansea for fans in some of those areas but any way you slice it up there are still something like 1.5 million people living in or within reasonable travelling distance of Cardiff

.......perhaps what I saw was 330,000 Cardiff & 430,000 immediate surrounding Valleys area Rhondda, Merthyr & Caerphilly .....everything else mentioned by Alf Red being too far east or west, although I suppose we have to take the Vale into account......
.................this is just too complicated......
