Been watching boxing stuff this week
Page 1 of 1 • Share
When We Were Kings - Great documentary, could've mentioned George Foreman more than they did considering he was the opponent but very informative nonetheless and captured the madness of the Rumble in the Jungle very well.
Raging Bull - Classic movie with great acting from both DeNiro and Pesci, a great biopic of a great fighter who had some serious issues.
The Hurricane - Poor. They could have done soooo much better with a true story as rich as Ruin Carters. Needed a better script, better director and better cast (apart from Denzel Washington who was good)
Cinderella Man - Great film telling the true story of James Braddock, well acted, directed and scripted - very enjoyable and inspirational.
Ali - Didn't enjoy it at all. Not sure what it was about the film that I didn't like, might have been the way it was filmed which just seemed cheap and the whole story seemed disjointed.
Tyson documentary - This wasn't the Tyson doc with Tyson himself narrating, this was an earlier ESPN doc which did a great job of telling the story of his life complete with fight footage. Spent too long at the end going on about his conviction which meant skipping over details of his later fights.
Rocky 2 - Cheesy but it's a classic and I've loved it since I was a kid so I always enjoy rewatching it. Plus I like to 'smeel mainly'.
Warrior - This film is clearly trying to be the 'Rocky' of UFC and comes close to achieving it. Very enjoyable, ridiculous storyline (kind of like Bloodsport in a way, or maybe Kickboxer, I always get those two films mixed up) but found myself loving it in a childish kind of way.
Tyson v Buster Douglas - Probably the greatest boxing upset in heavyweight history. Tyson was knocking out everyone that came near him convincingly when this fight was put on in Japan. Douglas was such an underdog the bookies had stopped taking bets on the fight, nobody expected the fight to last more than 2 rounds. Douglas mother died a couple of weeks before the fight and he was suffering from respiratory problems which required penicillin and antihistamine - Tyson should have had this fight in the bag for so many reasons but Douglas fought the fight of a lifetime - Full fight available on YouTube.
Lewis v Holyfield 1 - The fighters went the full 12 rounds and went to points. Lewis looked to have won every round of the fight, throwing twice as many punches and landing twice as many punches as Holyfield. When the final bell sounded you could see both fighters knew that Lewis had taken the titles. However, the judges had other ideas, scoring the fight a draw. Lewis was absolutely ROBBED! Watch the full fight on YouTube - it's an absolute travesty that the judges decision was allowed to stand.
Lewis v Holyfield 2 - This time around the fight was closer but Lewis outboxed Holyfield once again and threw and landed more punches again. Even though the fight was much closer, the judges got it right this time around and awarded Lewis the win.
Well, that's my boxing week roundup, join me next week for cheese rolling.

These hot summer days tend to make one aggressive. Only a few more degrees and people will be acting out these films in the streets.
If there are any would be looters out there I might show an interest in some Canon L series lenses. As all the police are at the Olympics and the government will have leaned on all news media not to broadcast any "bad" news whilst the Olympics are on it should be easy going.

I watched the hurricane recently and thoroughly enjoyed it! But that maybe due to the fact that Denzel Washington is such a good actor he can make a film good on his own! Also I enjoyed The Warrior!

The Prizefighter and the Lady is still the best boxing film for me.
Its in black and white and was made in 1933 but its a great film and I normally hate black and white films. Its about Jack Dempsey.

- Spoiler:
- That film is terribly biased in Rubin Carter's favour though. Since his release all he has been doing is going around the world protesting his innocence. You'd think a free man would appreciate being free again and just live life. I still reckon he was guilty. That film made him out to be some sort of victim.

Just watched 'Real Steel' on Sky... Without doubt the finest robot boxing movie of all time easily beating... er...er... well.... erm... It IS just is the best robot boxing movie of all time... It's a bit like Robot Wars meets The Champ meets the Raving Bonkers (Rock 'Em and Sock 'Em Fighting Robots) game from the 70s...
Could only be better if Metal Mickey was given a crack at Zeus rather than Atom (who had a mesh face like the grill of a Daimler 250) but still managed to convey more emotion than Hugh Jackman

Lot's of talk of Hurricane, I presume you've heard the Bob Dylan song about it? Pure brilliance from the master.
