I know he's out for the first game but I've been hearing rumours of him being out for 6 or 7 weeks with his ankle injury - has anybody else heard the same?

I'm not saying it's true - it could just be the rumour mill working overtime.
Malky does have a habit of hiding these things though (see Gordon Mitch's disappearance for several months last season) and for morale purposes I can totally see the benefit of this approach.
