First topic message reminder :

Now I was born in 1991 so have no first hand experience of her leadership. Although I come from a working class background my parents never suffered from much of her legislation, but I've looked into it many a time and can understand how things such as the Poll Tax, unemployment levels, increased inflation, large numbers of business closures, the privatisation and selling off of industry, breaking up of unions and even the Falklands war can impact upon people. One thing I've noticed across this board, and when I used to browse CCMB, was the unwavering hatred towards Margaret Thatcher (Croesy aside).

What I guess I'm trying to say is, was it a case of you had to be there and witness it all to feel that rage?

I mean things certainly feel like they're repeating themselves. Double-dip recession, large numbers of unemployment, the closure of age-old high street institutions, the introduction of ridiculous student fees and even the needless war with Iraq are comparable to the 80's, yet although I feel contempt for the government, more so as I age, I don't have the hatred for Blair, Brown, Cameron et al. that I sense many people have for Thatcher.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I was a child during the miners strike, and whilst I had no family working in the mines at that time, many of my friends fathers were miners. She was brutal, she went for the kill, and effectively did kill the valleys of South Wales and communities across the north of England. For all that she did for London and the south of England, much of the rest of the uk paid the price. Let us not forget her son mark either. Dodgy arms trading, and failed coup. Apples don't fall too far from the tree. Whilst I won't celebrate her passing, I shan't mourn it or mark it either. Strange that she spent her las six months in the ritz hotel though, as apposed to staying with family.

A doctor on the radio this evening was saying he was getting two male suicides a year as a result of what she did to South Wales.

On the flip side she funded the armed forces to an acceptable level that allowed them to perform their duties effectively at that time...

There was a very telling interview last night with her chauffeur who drove her for the 14 years when she was Prime Minister... he said that during that time she showed no emotion... through everything she did... the lives ruined... the lives lost in combat... nothing... until the day she wad ousted... then floods of tears... tears of self pity... sums it up really.... loathsome
