We have a North Wales, a North of England, and a Northern Iron (even a Northern America, Korea etc), but not a North Scotland or even a North of Scotland

Because it's already the northern most part of the UK. North of Watford and all that. We never had a North Glamorgan when the county was butchered even though Mid glamorgan was obviously the North part of it. North always has connotations of grim about it. Maybe that's why there's a reluctance to use it when you're already there.

Isn't Northern Scotland referred to as The Highlands?
