I was born in Wales, so 100%
My parents were both born in Wales, so still 100%
All four of my grandparents were born in Wales, so still 100%
Of my eight great-grandparents, five were born in Wales, one in Ireland and two in England, so does that suddenly make me 62.5% Welsh?
I'd propose a 50% reduction/dilution factor for the effect of each generation, so by going back three generations to the great grand-parents, the non-Welsh element of 37.5% is actually reduced to 4.7%, making me 95.3% Welsh...........I can live with that!

Two Welsh parents & three Welsh grandparents with my paternal grandfather being Greek. Not sure what that makes me other than slightly greasy.

It surely depends on how many generations you go back, doesn't it?
Of my great-grandparents, 7 were Welsh and 1 was English.
If I go back one more generation, of my 16 great-great-grandparents, 10 were Welsh, 4 English, 2 Irish.
I dont have a slide rule to hand, but what difference does that make in TDA's mysterious formula?

To a certain extent, I am making this up as I go along, but what I had in mind was to go back until you hit a genertaion that wasn't 100% Welsh. Assuming that your parents and grandparents were all Welsh, like me, we take your great-grandparents as the reference point.............in which case, you come out at 98.4% Welsh and 1.6% English.
I suppose we could go back to your great-great-grandparents, but we would then be carrying back a value of less than 100%......all gets a bit complicated......

98.4% sounds good to me.
But just to complicate things, our two offspring have all 8 great grandparents who were Welsh - so are we saying that they are more Welsh than me - even though I was actually born in Wales whereas they (because we live in the border country) were born in England?

Are you sure that you are not me, as we have the same situation? Both children born in Glos, our son regards himself Welsh, our daughter says that she is definitely English. I would say that our son and your children could be regarded as 50% Welsh......our daughter......goodness only knows where she came from...........

It does indeed sound very similar....kids born in Bristol, son has always regarded himself as Welsh, daughter used to swear she's English, but more recently has seen the light and decided she's Welsh (probably owing to an English boyfriend).TDA wrote:The Tonker wrote:TDA wrote:The Tonker wrote:It surely depends on how many generations you go back, doesn't it?
