In the first 6 months of this year, the number of transfer deals fell by 2%, but their financial value increased by a massive 39%:

Unsurprisingly, English clubs are leading the way. Perhaps clubs are increasingly seeking quality over quantity. Certainly Malky has always said he won't buy for the sake of buying - the player has to fit and add quality to the squad.

I don't know why we are so bad at transfers in Britih football. We consistently buy players for at least twice as much as they are actually worth. Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres are two high profile examples, but it's widespread in all our leagues.

From wiki: "For market price to equal market value, the market must be informationally efficient and rational expectations must prevail." Seems to me that expectations in our football are anything but rational!

There is a dearth of genuine top class UK footballers, and every team wants one. Therefore they pay over the odds for anyone who looks decent in case they turn out to be a gem

I should of clarified I don't just mean British national footballers, I mean anyone that currently plays in the country. Take for example Michu - admittedly a steal at 2 million pounds. One good season in the premier league however and suddenly everyone reckons he's worth closer to 15-20 million. Marouanr Fellaini apparently has a 20 million pound price tag, does anyone genuinely think he deserves to be in the same price tag as Isco and Pirlo?

And don't get me started on Wayne Rooney, in my opinion the most inexplicably overrated player of this generation.

Fellaini has a release clause of £23.5m that is only active from the opening of the transfer window until early August I believe. Usually minimum fee clauses are a way to keep a player happy and also ward off interest by asking for more than their true value.

But the rumour that Man Utd rejected £10m plus Mata or Luiz blew my mind. I'd have Mata over Rooney any day, although I think Chelsea may have denied that this was their offer. United should get shot of him as he does this more and more and for god's sake he's on £250,000 a week!

I wouldn't need any cash on top of that offer, if you offered me Mata in exchange for Rooney I'd bite your hand clean off The transfer spiral 692773407

Direct comparisons about the perceived value of players can be difficult to make; as supporters do we ever get to really know what a particular deal is worth?
Fellaini is awesome surrounded by average Premier League players, apart from Leighton Baines who is world class. It would be interesting to see Fellaini in a team of better players, though my Everton chums would (rightly) disagree.

We have now entered a League where clubs the size of Spurs are not safe from losing star players (Bale) to rival clubs.

I'm glad we have made it to the Premier League though I'll reserve judgement on how enjoyable it's all going to be. We have been spoilt for a number of years now having supported a team capable (eventually) of winning the league. Next season is going to be a new experience for many.

On the subject of Wayne Rooney - he is not overrated; he has just failed to deliver what he is capable of.
