Never a fan of him, or how he played. Apart from his passing and free-kicks I thought he was a completely overrated player. However, what he has done for the sport has been immense, and probably won't be emulated for a long time.

One of the increasingly rare players that actually have a damn about representing England. For that, and that alone, I consider him a legend.

That would be nice but they both thrive on being celebrities.
Both rather talentless and overrated in my opinion.

A good player but not in the same league as others from the same vintage such as Zidane, Figo, Del Piero, the fat Ronaldo, etc.

Beckham was probably the best passer and best dead ball specialist of his era and if not the best, then certainly near the top. He also had an engine and very often unmatched desire. This was enough for him, at his peak, to the classed as one of the most valuable players of his era. He went to the USA 2 or 3 years too early, which he probably regrets, but he had a superb career and never retired from England, showing passion many of the latest crop can't match.
However what I don't like is the constant circus that revolves around him and the stick (who is actually talentless) life. Yes the media had a lot to do with it, but he played up to it to the point that he will put his face to any product for a quick buck. He is a media whore and I wish he would just f**k the f**k off now. But he won't.

I do think he wasn't the best free-kick taker.
Above him at the same time was Juninho Pernambucano, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Alessandro Del Piero. Maybe Roberto Carlos as well.

Becks said today in his usual 'look at me world way' that he decided to retire now while he was still playing at the top level.
I think he's probably about 6 years too late saying that.

It means nothing if it isn't FIFA

Well like I said, one of the best. I don't think Carlos scored that many, although I could be wrong. Like Arks said, he got what he did out of his ability. And he did drag England into the 2002 world cup.
