I've heard of this all over the place, but what exactly is the Harlem Shake? I don't get it?!

You're not alone. The first i heard of it was a video Trash linked to a day or two ago. Basically it is linked to a song called Harlem Shake and as Wikipedia describes it
'Usually, a video begins with one person (often helmeted) dancing to the song alone for 15 seconds, surrounded by other people not paying attention or unaware of the dancing individual. When the bass drops, the video switches to the entire crowd doing a crazy convulsive dance for the next 15 seconds.'
Why this idea has suddenly gone viral is beyond me though.

Spot on... Some one starts slowly on their own and then it all goes a bit 'Kirkhouse Merthyr' when the bass drops
