Thursday 27th Sept 2012.
Maynard will undergo surgery today to repair his torn knee ligaments and will be out for the rest of the season.
And Mackay revealed Mason is in his thoughts as he works out who he wants to lead the front line in Saturday’s mouth-watering Championship clash.
Young striker Mason fired 12 goals in 2011-12 but has yet to start for the Bluebirds during this campaign.
However, Mackay promised: “He will be heavily involved this season.
“Joe has huge potential, he’s a smashing lad and we have high hopes for him.
“He was a surprise to many people when he first came to Cardiff in terms of how quickly he learned and progressed. He came on leaps and bounds.
“The second season for any player is never easy and for a striker it means opposing defenders know your strengths and weaknesses.
“Joe, with Ben Turner, came through an hour for our development team against Charlton in midweek and each will be in our squad for Saturday’s match. There is competition for places up front and Joe is right there in the mix.”
Mason, 21, could link up with Heidar Helguson in a 4-4-2 formation against Blackpool, or he could even be utilised at some point as a lone striker.
Midfield ace Jordon Mutch, who missed City’s 3-2 defeat at Crystal Palace with a foot injury, is also back in contention for a place.
“Jordon was with us yesterday, trains again this morning and tomorrow,” said Mackay. “If everything goes as we hope then he too will be in the squad for the match against Blackpool.
“That’s a tough game against the most fancied team in our division – and they come to us off the back of a defeat which means they are even more dangerous.
“But we have made a good start to the season, the second best this club has made in 50-odd years. Our job is to do everything we can to build on that in home matches against Blackpool and then Birmingham next Tuesday.”
Of Maynard, Mackay said: “Nicky will be given the care and attention he needs. He will return for us, whenever that is, fit and strong. I want him to have a career which lasts another 10 to 15 years.

Wouldn't it be great if they opened up his knee and instead of torn ligamens found a small family of doormice living in there? The surgeon could gently re-house the tiny rodents somewhere that had losts of hay and Maynard could give Holloway reason to wear that stupid startled expression of his by leaping from the bench to grab a hat-trick.

Always disappointing when one of your marquee signings ends up being out all season, but hey, life goes on and we have plenty of goal scorers to take his place.
In other news, the irony of it all is Kenny Miller will now have scored more goals in 12-13 than Nicky Maynard, his replacement.
