For many years, particularly when we were trying to play the ball out of defence, there would be a persistent hysterical cry from my mate next to me of "Find a blue shirt...find a blue shirt, easy ball...", usually followed by an exasperated "no!" when his sage advice appeared to be wilfully ignored.

On Friday evening, being of ever-advancing years, more defective eyesight and an increasingly forgetful...er...memory, I took my seat in the CCS only to find I'd left my glasses in the car. OK to follow the match, but picking out who was who was a bit more of a challenge than usual. But it did occur to me - or maybe I imagined it - that the slightly blurred red shirts stood out just a bit more than the blue shirts. Do they give a slight advantage when it comes to following my mate's new advice of 'find a red shirt?'. And with red shirts in the crowd rather fewer in number than blue shirts were in previous seasons, does this also make the shirts stand out more for those on the pitch? Just a thought....

Yes. And there are independent studies that substantiate that red is a slight advantage in sport.
