There's a bit too much excitement about squad numbers for my liking sometimes. Liverpool fans were going craY because Rickie Lambert was given the number 9 shirt because 'he's not a proper number nine'.
They really don't mean anything anymore.

True enough...........even years ago, Ray Kennedy played in the number 5 shirt for Liverpool, despite being an advanced midfielder / striker for his entire career. More recently Clint Dempsey was given the 2 shirt at Spurs.
Not forgetting our own Filip Kiss, originally given number 4, but hardly a first choice either of his Championship seasons. That said, injury didn't help his cause. Velcro and Cornelius, both number 9......that poisoned chalice having now been handed on to Kenwyne Jones.

Personally I would just draw them out of a hat for all the difference it makes. Imagine the walesonline headlines...
'New Cardiff Manager Red614 has already split my opinion by making the controversial decision to play Joe Mason as the first choice goalkeeper, handing him the number one shirt. The strike pairing of Ben Turner and Declan John is also bound to cause controversy, while he was sufficiently impressed with David Marshall's debut premier league season to hand him a position on the right wing, with Craig Noone being moved to centreback'

I think I remember you advocating the very same selection last season.
