The Bristol Post reports that City’s prospects of re-signing goalkeeper Simon Moore have today been boosted by news David Marshall will stay with Cardiff for the upcoming season.
City manager Steve Cotterill is looking to reinforce his keeping options and provide some competition for Frank Fielding as number one. Cotterill is a long time admirer of Moore and brought him in last season for a loan spell.
The move for Moore is almost entirely dependant on the future of David Marshall, whose performances in Cardiff’s relegation season have attracted numerous suitors. The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Southampton have made enquiries, but Cardiff has received no formal bids for their ‘player of the year’.
It is understood that Cardiff have been given assurances by Marshall that he wants to stay and aid them in their bid to bounce straight back up to the Premier League.
Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has gone on record to say that Marshall is a key player and he has no plans to sell him. Marshall is contracted to the club until the 2017/2018 season and a potential bid would have to match Cardiff’s valuation of the highly rated keeper.
Greater certainty for Marshall has a knock-on effect for Moore, who would likely stay down the pecking order at the Welsh club.
With two years left on his contract, he is likely to be made available for loan to allow Marshall and Lewis to fight for first team spots and this is seen as City’s best chance of bringing him back to Bristol.
The twenty-four year old keeper made eleven starts for The Robins last season, which helped them pull away from the Sky Bet League 1 relegation places and achieve a solid top-half finish.
