.....1968!
Have dug out some old programmes to look up the details of the Hamburg ECWC semi final and found reference to City's tour of Australia & New Zealand summer 1968. They played 14 matches between 28 May and 7 July, winning 11, drawing 2 and losing only once. They scored 48 goals against 13 conceded.
A proper pre-season's preparation you might think, but our first two matches back in the old Div 2 were home to Palace (lost 0 - 4) and home to Charlton the following Wednesday (lost 0 - 1). A real anticlimax after the European campaign the previous season............been doing a Cardiff ever since!
To be fair, City recovered well from that poor start and finished 7th on 49 points. Blackpool were promoted in second place with 53 points. Those two home defeats might have made all the difference, as had City won both games, they would have equalled Blackpool's points, but with a much better goal difference (or was it still goal average back then?) would have been promoted ahead of Blackpool.
