The break is an annoyance but a necessary one, the decline of international interest is a tragedy in my opinion.
If I had to choose, I'd rather see England lift the World Cup than Cardiff win the champions league. I'm not sure how many people share my patriotism nowadays though.

I'd say you're in a minority of one on this board. Anyway, there's more likelihood of City winning the Champions League than Wales or England winning the World CupRed614 wrote:The break is an annoyance but a necessary one, the decline of international interest is a tragedy in my opinion.

I'd say with the state of football at youth level for both sides that even in the (hopefully) 60 years or so of lifetime I have left I doubt ill see either come close to lifting an international cup. But in my personal opinion that's irrelevant, ill still be behind them and backing them at every opportunity.Cyncoedslumdog wrote:I'd say you're in a minority of one on this board. Hopefully I don't sound like that English fan sat in his ivory tower critiscising welsh fans for not being as proud of their team as I am. It's not that at all as at this point in time, and it was displayed perfectly this qualifying campaign, the gap between English football and that of Wales and Scotland is nowhere near as big as the rankings suggest.

I can warm to the principle of that sentiment Red; it's always been country before club for me. I find it ironic that Wales have, for now, two teams in the Premier League but with seemingly little impact on the quality of the Wales Team. Given that until a few years ago England had all the teams in the Premier League with equally little impact on the quality of the England Team, I'm sure you can warm to that as well!Red614 wrote:The break is an annoyance but a necessary one, the decline of international interest is a tragedy in my opinion.

I watched the England game last night; the side cried out for the inclusion of the player who created more chances in the Premier League last year than any other player. What is England's obsession with (C)ashley Cole? Leighton Baines was the player who should have been on the pitch.

I agree with Red's comments. Last night showed that British football as a whole is at a low ebb.
However, from a purely parochial point of view, the seeding systems make it almost impossible for teams to improve their chances for subsequent competitions.
Having slumped to where we are, we are always likely to be in groups with at least three other very good teams above us and others on a par.
However, if historically you have managed to be one of the top two teams in a group and then develop the ability to grind out enough results to maintain the status quo without actually achieving anything (no offence Red - England), you will always have an easier qualification route.
Also, if the game in your country is run by dickheads (Wales), improvement becomes almost impossible.

You are spot on about the seeding system; sides need to suddenly come out of nowhere with a vastly improved team performance (like Belgium) to break out of it. The system has been designed to minimise change at the top, neatly packaged as "sporting contests" which we, as supporters, lap up each time it comes round. Your analysis for England is sound. I think they will qualify as group winners without ever setting the group on fire. Quarter Finals exit looms for them in Brazil (as usual).Cyncoedslumdog wrote:I agree with Red's comments. Of England's starting eleven, Lambert and Jagielka were the only two to not play European football. Despite this, the only teams England have managed to defeat in qualifiers thus far are San Marino and Moldova. Montenegro, Poland and Ukraine, all minnows compared to England's supposed might, shrugged off any threat we had. It's emberassing, frankly.NN2Red2 wrote:I can warm to the principle of that sentiment Red; it's always been country before club for me.
