It's no doubt been done before but I thought I'd start a new strand because I'm bored. I've restricted my top three to teams I saw live or got to watch live on TV:
1. World - Brazil 1970. Simply incomparable and no need for defensive-minded defenders who can't score goals or a goalkeeper with any ability. Pele, Jairzinho, Rivelinho, Tostao, Gerson, Carlos Alberto. Wow is the only word for it.
2. Europe - Germany 1972. Beat Russia 3-0 in the final of the European Football Championship. Beckenbauer, Breitner, Netzer, Hoeness, Heynckes, Mueller. Very unlucky that they were around at the same time as Brazil 1970 but they won the World Cup on home soil in 1974 anyway (with Overath and Bonhof coming in).
3. UK - I hate to say it but Leeds 1971-72. Madeley, Cooper, Bremner, Charlton, Hunter, Lorimer, Clarke, Gray, Jones, Giles. Another team that had no requirement for a decent goalkeeper (they had the Wales keeper, Gary Sprake). My dad (a Leeds fan) took me to see them take apart the second best team of the day, Arsenal, at Highbury. Beat Man Utd and Newcastle 5-1 that season, and Notts Forest 6-1, as well as Southampton 7-0 in a mesmerising performance.
What does everyone else think?

Arsenals invincibles 03-04
They were the best, bar none. No one in the league could touch them, and I highly doubt any UK team at any point could give them a game. They went 49 games unbeaten, and 37 of those were wins.
The others while I can't claim to be old enough to have seen them, I would still agree.

AC Milan of late 80s/early 90s, with Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard.
France team of the 80s, in particular when they won Euro 84, and Platini scored 9 goals in 5 games.

Here's a couple of fantastic European teams from the mid 90s. Check out these line ups...

Glamorgan winning the County Championship in 1969: Eifion Jones, Bryan Davis, Malcolm Nash, Lawrence Williams, Roger Davis, Majid Khan, Tony Cordle, Peter Walker, Tony Lewis, Don Shepherd, Alan Jones.
Some really great team performances that year.

World: They won absolutely nothing but Brazil '86 were the first team I remember wanting to win almost as much as City. Socrates and Josimar. Carecca and Alamoa(sp). They were better than the 94 team that won the World Cup.
Europe: 88 Dutch. Pre-injury, Marco Van Basten was the best centre forward I can remember.
UK: Liverpool's Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton team was pretty good. It's a shame they weren't in Europe (yes I know it's Liverpool's fault)
Glamorgan: With Watkin tying up one end, I fancy Waqar would have knifed through the 69 team if they'd played the 97 lot somewhere coastal (but 69 was before I was born so I can't really argue about it).

Quite remarkable achievement that, considering Ossie Wheatley had all but retired and Jeff Jones had finally given up the fight against injury. Lawrence Williams was an enigma. I once saw him bowl an opening over of about 11 balls (wides & no ballls) and then clean bowl the opener with the first ball he managed to get on the stumps........Surrey, I think.....

Just goes to prove that the early 1970's was definitely the era of the greatest teams!
