Hi all, I’m just looking for a bit of travelling advice from any of you who have travelled before because I’m strongly thinking about upping and leaving this Island of ours for a while. I’m 28, I haven’t got any ties (no wife/gf or kids, I haven’t got a mortgage and I’m in a job I don’t particularly like) and have realised that I need to go and see more of this world before it’s too late and have real commitments or, erm, die! Over the years I’ve saved up a bit of money and I had planned to get a mortgage in the next year, but I now want to put this off because I don’t want to look back in a few years and say I wished I had done it.
So my idea is to save up as much money as I can in the next 9 or 10 months and leave for Australia October/November time. I want to see a couple of Ashes tests and then in the new year go to Melbourne for the Aussie Open and then who knows what or where from there.
The aim is to go for 5-6 months, but if I want to do that I know I’m going to have to work out there (bar work, lime picking for example) for a bit to keep my funds up as I don’t want to dip into my savings too much.
So has anyone done this before? Would I need a special visa to work out there? Is it possible to get an open return plane ticket? Any advice is welcome.
Thanks

Do it mate, I did it twice and loved it both times.
Id recomend doing SE Asia first then rock up to Aus/new zealand.
You can get a working holiday visa pretty easy I think, besides that I wouldnt go planning your trip as it'll change as you go. I arrived thinking I was gunna go here at this time and there at that time. I ended up getting stuck in Sydney for about 5 months cause I loved it so much (recomend going to Scruffy Murphies at the bottom end of Pitt street, top bar) October/November is just gettingto the busiest time of the year. You'll be really hard pressed to get Hostel accomodation in any of the big places for Xmas/NYE. which If your gunna do it. Do it in Sydney. Nothing better than ringing in the new year with a bag of Goon (you will grow to love the stuff) in Sydney.

Yeh Micky I don't plan on planning too much, there's certain things I want to do at certain times (the cricket and tennis) but other than that I will just see where the wind takes me. It's not definite yet, but the more I think about it the more it appeals.
The main thing is that I can get some sort of work out there to keep funds topped up because I know how expensive the country is.
Did you get an open plane ticket Micky? See I don't know when I would be coming back.
What ya going out there for Arks, a holiday or a particular event?

If that's his own foot, then he is obviously a man with too much time on his hands and goodness only knows what on his feet!

Leaving the country? Man, tough crowd today.
It's amazing what happens when you get hold of a marker pen after too much vino blanc di plonk. I think I was trying to create a Travelling Wilbury's style super group with my feet named Captain Piggy and The Toes. I passed out before they made it on tour though.
Caldi, I'm initially going out for a weeks work in Sydney but hoping to stay on as long as money will permit after. Mrs Arkay is coming too and we were thinking of a combo of Thailand/Vietnam or Cambodia for two weeks or so.

I clicked onto this site and your post just after setting up a Grooveshark nostalgiafest playlist from my travels around Europe and North America too many years ago. You must take your opportunity to travel. You'll love it. Make sure your money is rationed - if possible arrange for someone to look after it and deposit amounts at agreed intervals into an account you can access abroad.
