It turns out that the gun was a gas-powered pepper spray gun and would not have been able to kill the guy, just give him a bit of a sting in the eye.

The politician has also resigned as head of the party it appears.
What a stupid thing to do, run on the stage with some pepper spray in the form of a gun. It's not going to end well and by the pictures in the article, he appears to have had a right good kicking.
