Newscatle United/ Weakened sides in Europa League

Why do sides such as Newcaslte play a weakened squad in the Europa League? They play all season to get there... then put out the reserves. Just don't understand it at all.

Spurs did the same last season. I guess it's partly because it's seen as the Champions League annoying little brother when they really wanted to get into the former, and partly because they're allergic to playing on Thursdays......and let's face it, it's just not natural to play football on Thursdays.

Spurs I can understand more I guess. But Newcastle has an exceptional season last year which I will put all my money on them not repeating again this year.

Stoke done the same I believe... what are they hoping for?!

It's an absolutely awful from some bigger teams but perhaps more understandable by Newcastle. Plus Atromitos are shite,

I suppose it keeps the tie alive for the home leg and some fringe players get a good competitive run out.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT AT ALL. TEAMS LIKE BILBAO, PORTO, BENFICA, ATLETICO TRY SO HARD TO WIN IT. WITH THE CLUBS IN IT NOW IT IS A VERY PRESTIGIOUS TOURNAMENT IN MY OPINION. IT WILL NEVER BE THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BUT ITS VERY PRESTIGIOUS NO DOUBT AND I WOULD WANT TO WIN IT REGARDLESS.

It's taken for granted in England that there are 4 CL spots. If clubs like Spurs and Newcastle treat it as a joke and the co-efficient slips, it won't be around forever.
