20-odd years ago he was keen on combining the English and Scottish football leagues:

Obviously, never got very far but an interesting but probably unpopular concept either side of the border

Why not? Only reason I can think of is financial.

Imagine if the Welsh, English  and Scottish Leagues were merged. Getting behind Barry Town or Cardiff Met in their push towards the professional leagues would be a lot more interesting for a lot of people.

Probably end up without a national team, it would be Team GB or Team UK.

I was always quite partial to the idea of a Team GB squad but that was until last summer - just the best footballing fan experience ever following Wales. The only douchebaggery that I saw involved Engerlandshire fans back in the UK and I couldn't bear to be lumped in with them again.

I think the main problem of a UK League would be just the sheer size and scale of it. It's a long season as it is, trying to incorporate yet more teams and more levels fairly and without compromising quality would probably just be a step too far.

Don't think a league would work, but I've always backed the League Cup to become a nationwide competition. The Scottish League Cup already has Welsh teams in it I think - now go a step further.

The distances involved would make it unworkable, particularly for supporters, unless it was set up on a regional basis, in which case, what's the point? why

Is there anything he didn't try and meddle with? From dictatorships to sport, he tried changing it all, without achieving good results!

No different to other competitions in that sense, such as the Champions League. If the game is high-profile enough - a quarter-final against Celtic - then fans will travel.
