Anybody taking a look at the new Steam Machines?
The Steam link looks a particularly affordable an good option - essentially using the hardware of your PC and converting it to a console style setup with more integrated functions for the Steam controllers.

Even I ain't got a scooby.....
Arkay...I wouldn't bother in all honesty.
Firstly, the steam machines run off steam OS ( a reskinned linux) which basically means that only about 15% of steams library actually works currently..though I'm sure this would change if there was a massive uptake.
Secondly, you are basically buying a mini-pc and the specs you are getting for the money you would spend are not great value... in fact, it's a bit of a rip imo.
You would be much better off building a pc from scratch..super simple to do, cheaper with better specs and a lot of fun too!
As long as your tv had an hdmi input, you could slot a micro pc tower right in next to your tv, plug your xbox controller into a usb port and there we go! A 'steam box' that is cheaper with better specs and that runs all the games available on steam!
(This should have been my first contribution on the forum following my sabbatical...darn it.)

You lost me after firstly
Welcome back Rhys! Are you happy to be back in Barry?
I did build a PC of my own years ago, not sure I could manage it now though. Have you got a good resource you use / read up on?

Yeah, steam machines are overpriced and underpowered if you have the confidence to step out on your own.
Put it this way - I got laughed at when I told my friends I was buying 1200 pound of PC parts and putting it together with no prior experience beyond changing some ram ten years ago. But I didn't break anything!

I wouldn't consider a Steam machine anyway for the reasons you both stated. I was looking at the Steam Link though as that was only £40 but reviews have not been kind and a £5 HDMI cable will probably have to suffice until they can (IF they can) iron out the kinks.

Did you plug it into your modem first? Amateur mistake.
