Don Cowie declines Cardiff City contract offer and will leave South Wales this summer

Thursday Jul 03, 2014 By Steve Tucker

Cardiff City's hard working midfielder Don Cowie has decided against signing the contract put on the table to him by Cardiff City. He is now set to leave the club this summer.

Don Cowie will leave Cardiff City this summer Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

The 31-year-old midfielder had been offered a new contract in the Welsh capital, which he had looked close to signing, but the Scotland international has chosen to move on after three seasons at the club.

Since the end of the Premier League season, in-demand Cowie has been linked with moves to Rangers, Blackburn and Watford, the club he joined the Bluebirds from back in July 2011.

The crowd favourite made 99 appearances for Cardiff, scoring nine goals in the process. He had ten starts in the Bluebirds ill-fated Premier League campaign last term.

Solskjaer had hoped Cowie would remain at the club, but after the signing Kagisho Dikgacoi from Crystal Palace this simmer the Norwegian said he was content with his midfield options now and wished Cowie all the best for the future.

“Don has been a great servant to the club and a fantastic lad to have in the dressing room,” said Solskjaer.

“There was a contact there, but we have made signings now and Don wanted to keep his options open so all we can do now is wish him all the very best for the future.”

I find it difficult to be critical of the Don as a 100% player but I think it's the right decision for both parties.
Good luck to him.

All the best to him. As mentioned he was a player who would always give 100% - hopefully he enjoys success elsewhere at this level!

He's hung around for Malky to land somewhere, but now his hand has been forced.

Nevertheless, an excellent professional and all the best for wherever his career takes him.

Wigan Athletic it is then!

I think they will need watching this year. A very good side who showed City a thing or two in the Cup.

Our games against them with Taylor & Cowie in opposition will have some extra spice!

As should our games against Blackburn with Gestede and Conway. Add to that our usual disappointment against Ipswich and we have 3 (6) tough hurdles to overcome right away.

Thankfully we still have Leeds around.

P.S - Good luck to Cowie. An honest professional but the right time to move on for us and him i feel.
