I'll second that Tache but realistically, Brayford must be wondering now if this is his chance with us. Personally I hope so.

Good luck to Kev. He has been a great servant at the club.

However, what the hell is Ole doing giving him another 12 month contract extension earlier this year only to send him on a season long loan for the duration of it?  Kevin McNaughton 2854552383

Nailed it. Doesn't exactly inspire early season confidence in his squad management.

maybe kev was told we will offer you a contract but cant guarantee first team football, kev agreed but then thought actually I would like to go somewhere that can give me game time

But if Ole knew he wasn't going to play regardless of whether he wanted to stay or not, why keep him? Cost cutting is a necessity when you find yourselves relegated, and as sad as it was it would make sense to get McNaughton off the wage bill if he is effectively dead weight. Instead he's paid for Bolton to get a free player for a season.

Bolton will be paying his wages so they haven't got a free player. If we hadn't renewed his contract (which I wouldn't have) he would have been free anyway.

Makes perfect sense to me in that OGS is shaping his squad as he goes along. I believe McNaughton was offered the new contract as Ole knew precious little about Brayford at that point.

Presuming he likes what he see now, he has Brayford, KTC and Fabio who can play right back....you have to presume that KTC is staying, if Kev has gone out on loan.

At left back, which Kev also covered, Fabio & Declan John have it tied down, with Joe Ralls as back up.......not forgetting Matt Connolly, who can play across the back four.

A one-year contract for McNaughton was pennies in the bigger scheme of things. A useful player to have for the season if he had been needed, but one who can be released in favour of retaining younger, longer term prospects.

As Snr says, Bolton will be picking up the wages, so I believe it was shrewd squad management in tying SuperKev to us in the first instance. There was always going to be a loan market for him.

Agree with that Brazilian TDA. The Bolton News shed a bit more light on it by explaining that Ole was impressed by Kev's form at Bolton when he first arrived and offered him a new contract in January as well as refusing to let him go back on loan. He's obviously reassessed the situation since and decided he doesn't need him

Is that in the same way that Malky reassessed his views on Velikonja and Brayford and decided he didn't need them? Mistakes are mistakes. Malky made them certainly but rushing in to offer a new contract while still in the Prem to a player who, a few months later, is not required by us in the Championship reeks of being nothing less than a mistake too.

I accept that if, and it is an if as far as i know, Bolton pick up all of McNaughton's wages then it will not have cost us financially. The more worrying part is what it it says about Ole's judgement.

I think he acted quickly because he didn't know much about him and gave him another year before he became a free agent. Velcro and Brayford had presumably been scouted extensively beforehand - so we'll agree to differ as well!
