I was wondering the same thing.
I don't know if he's a right or left footed player which could give us a clue. My feeling would be Hudson because Caulker has the one thing he doesn't - pace.

Not allowing for any issues of preseason form I would say Turner is most likely to miss out. Malky will have known what kind of player he was looking for but has still announced Hudson as captain previously. That implies to me he will at least start the season. If he struggles then I think Turner will come back in.

if the choice was between hudson and turner then most would prefer to have hudson over turner, but again life aint as simple as that.

I think Hudson/Caulker will start as the first choice pairing.
Injury and suspension will result in Turner getting a chance during the season.
The left/right footed balance of the centre-halves makes no difference in my opinion.

Caulker is right footed, so from a purely tactical perspective it would be Caulker and Turner.
However, it would take a brave man to drop Hudson. Personally I'm not convinced as to how important is to have two centrebacks who use different feet preferably. Besides, we're talking premiership defenders, it surerly isn't too much to ask for them to use their weaker foot occasionally. The 'modern' centre forward is expected to score with both feet, so why not the modern defender?

I would imagine Turner would be dropped, as Huds is captain. Personally I would prefer it if the captaincy is awarded on a match by match basis, that way you don't have to worry about dropping your nominated captain if he is under performing

Well, well, well - looks as if Malky and I are the only two who agree on the value of a right/left pair of centre backs with Hudson the one to miss out.Cyncoedslumdog wrote:I was wondering the same thing.

We'll have to see at West Ham, although no one can doubt the size of Malky's balls if he's dropping our player of the season.Cyncoedslumdog wrote:Well, well, well - looks as if Malky and I are the only two who agree on the value of a right/left pair of centre backs with Hudson the one to miss out.Cyncoedslumdog wrote:I was wondering the same thing.

Caulker / Turner for me. I think the right / left thing is significant, but I also think that Big Ben raises his game when he is facing tougher opposition........just needs to sort out that distribution..........

When you look at last seasons stats, Caulker played most often as the left sided centre back for Spurs
Just to revisit this one....watching the Hull game, I can see now why having a left footed centre back is important. There was a number of times on Saturday where Turner had to put a vital big left boot in, something that Hudson wouldn't have been able to do.
Still Hudson is very unlucky to be missing out. Thought he would have guaranteed a starting place.
