Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine FC, entering the last game of the season, were level on points in the final aupmatic promotion spot to the Nigerian national league, with Police Machine ahead on goal difference. In both their respective games, they headed into half time at 0-0. Plateau United Feeders came out on fire, scoring in quick succession. And again, and again, and again. They eventually won 79-0, raising a few eyebrows. Police Machines must of cottoned on to this at some point and upped their own game - winning 67-0.
Needless to say, officials suspected cheating. All four teams in the matches have been banned for ten years from professional league football, with many of the match officials and players involved receiving lifetime bans.

It's funny but also scary too.
I read an article quite recently (I think it was in FourFourTwo) about referees in Nigeria and how they are often far too scared to award any decisions against the home team for fear of what might happen to them during the game, let alone after it. It was accompanied by pictures of rival fans going at each other with knives and machetes

Just typed out a long message which didn't submit, but I touched on that FourFourTwo article. Think the league winners won two away games all season - more than any other side! How a league so corrupt can continue I don't know.
Ahhh, the old lost-in-browser message. You can sometimes retrieve it by hitting the Back button in a panic but not always.
And yes, it defies belief that anybody would enjoy watching a sport that was so influenced by outside factors.
