I've thought long and hard about this and for overall quality, it has to be the 80's..........

I think they all had some great tunes but always felt that the 80s was a bit barren on the whole music wise (sorry TDA!). The 90s too, had it's god-awful share of turgid Britpop, but also some absolute crackers that have stood the test of time. I have to say thought that the songs of the last decade are the ones I keep coming back to. I actually think the digital age has liberated a lot of bands as now they know they can find audiences outside of radio play and charts and, for me, I think it has provided some outstanding songs.

There's plenty of good music still being made out there folks - no matter what your preference - you just have to look for it.

Ah the moment of truth. This is kind of a hard one to answer because part of me wants to answer as Arkay did. Perhaps not so much about the turgid britpop of the 90's which i also mostly disliked but mainly ignored. This was far outweighed for me by the great wealth of indie American bands i love like Pavement, Belly, Archers of Loaf, Grandaddy, Sebadoh and more.

Even most of these bands are taking a back seat in my current musical preferences though which continue to be for new sounds - there really is some great new modern music out there - just not always what you hear listening to daytime commercial radio.

So is my vote going to 2000+ as that is what i listen to most? No. The problem is that for everything i find which i love and excites me there is something which grates, which just does not sit comfortably with my rock and indie sensibilities and makes me want to skip past the song and on to something else.

VT asked that we choose on the songs posted and there was simply too much on the 90's and 2000+ collections that i would want to skip past no matter how much i loved the rest of it. The 70's gave me that wonderful nostalgia for my own childhood, my own era and the 60's a wonderful melting pot of all kinds of styles which developed or became popular.

The decade that makes me want to listen to the whole playlist however is the 50's. I am sure there was some dire stuff released during the 50's too but maybe time provides a kind of filtration process where the cream rises to the top in threads like these. It is the playlist that is giving me the most enjoyment listening to it.

So - a playlist made up just of my own choices? That would be a close run thing between the 90's and 2000+.
Playlists as they have actually appeared here - The 50's have it.

No need to apologise Arkay!

I grew up in the 60's & 70's and that is the music I knew best. The 80's largely passed us by as we were bringing up children and just had less time for such things. Looking back at the earlier decades, there is an abundance of fantastic music, as can be seen by what has been posted here, but there was also a lot of rubbish around in the earlier years, particularly in the 70's......the disco era!

My wife is a huge fan of Tamla Motown and the soul music of the 60's......it does nothing for me at all. During the 80's, I was 25 - 35 age range and even though not listening to music as much, still young enough to appreciate how, particularly, rock music had evolved. I find now that if we do listen to anything at home, it does tend to be from that decade.

This has been a great thread and the play lists show just how much excellent music we have been able to and can still enjoy. It was also a welcome diversion from all things football.......Thanks and Well Done Trash & Toast Boy....... The mighty mighty best decade for music poll... 1525230823
