Other notable faces include Cowie, Ralls and Kiss, who all start. So...do you think another Velikonja hat trick would put him any closer to the first team, at all?

No. I feel that only if we fail to sign any forward during January then have an injury crises between now and the end of the season will Velcro get near the first team.
I think he is ahead of Nat Jarvis though - probably.

I guess it's easy to forget (or perhaps ignore) that we can't demand a brand new striker AND want Velikonja to start simultaneously. Invariably unless Velikonja turns out to be the new Lionel Messi he's unlikely to be able to compare at least straight away if we get a proper 'star' in. Loan makes the most sense as you said Rhys.
I too however am also beginning so share your opinion that something's not right with him. The official view that he's 'not strong enough' I believe more and more everyday is nonsense. One because he's scoring regularly everytime e's asked too, and why the skill level in the development is much lower the physicality is still there. And two, we only need to look at players like Messi, Walcott and Cazorla to see being a bit weak physically is a very minor problem if you have the talent. Then you have the opinion that Malky hasn't taken well to him talking to the papers. This one I also hope is false, simply because so really hope Malky isn't punishing a very talented but irritated player just because he spoke out. Football goes hand in hand with egos - Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic aren't exactly Jesus reincarnated but they're also the best in the world. A good manager surely has to be able to forgive a little bit of hot headed nature from a youth stuck on the sidelines right?
What's that leave? Option three - he's not very good. I really hope there's another option we're missing.

Velcro too his goal well in one on one with the keeper and worked very hard throughout but looked lightweight.
It surprised me how much time he spent wandering around looking for the ball and drifting into midfield, particularly first half. He did spend more time on the shoulder of the last defender after the break but was caught offside a few times and looked as if he needed an out and out target man with him.
First half was an impressive passing display by the team and I expected more goals but Cowie & Nugent came off after about an hour and things seem to drift afterwards. Harris looked pacey with good close control until getting a knock and Kiss worked hard as well as having a few attempts on goal.
Lewis had virtually nothing to do throughout but made a brilliant one handed save from a close range header when he was going the wrong way.
