Should we be concerned about the money that is being spent?
Page 1 of 1 • Share
There was a Wales Online blog today raising concerns about the amount of money that we are spending and if we don't get promoted this season, basically it could all go tits up very quickly.
http://blogs.walesonline.co.uk/sport/2012/09/hey-big-spenders.html?
I was quick to dismiss it as just another pissed off fan writing his piece.
However, it does raise questions. Should we be concerned with the amount of money that the club is currently spending? Can we afford it? Should we worry about the clubs future?
What do you think? My personal view is that I trust our Malaysian investors to sort out the Langston issue at some point this year which will result in turning all remaining debt into equity- effectively rendering the debate mute.
We have had to deal with so much crap over the years that we can not actually bring ourselves to believe that good things can actually happen at our club.

I have watched Whitts' sublime free kick over and over on Cardiff City Player. The commentator says something like
'No words that will come out of our mouths will do justice to what we have just seen. That was an incredible free kick. The ability to get the ball up and over the wall to a postage stamp area in the far corner and with that amount of bend is just talent and quality at the very, very top level.'
Now, I worry about my fee income and my mortgage because I can influence them. I do have views about the debt but I can't influence them, so I am not going to worry unduly. They are VT's concern and I have faith that this self made billionaire has a better idea than I of what to do. I am not going to let it spoil my enjoyment of watching the likes of Whitts, Bellamy, Mason, Noone and (hopefully) Kimbo all playing for my club. After some of the dross I have watched in the last 47 years i am really going to savour every minute.

I'm of the same mind as you Rhys.
The fact is, without the Malaysians the club would've gone tits up overnight anyway. The historical debt they were lumbered with must've been something of a shock. We have to trust that they have a plan and there have been various times over the last three years when it could've all gone horribly wrong and they could've walked away. It hasn't and they haven't.
While I don't want to stick my head in the sand and pretend it's not a concern, barring the slim chance of another Sugar Daddy coming along and buying out the club, the Malaysians are the best and only chance we have for survival. Given their track record in business, it seems they would only act in the interests of making money for the club.
This latest bout of spending was clearly indicated as part of the rebrand, so it is not unexpected and one likes to think separate from other club spending - so, in that sense, it doesn't worry me.
However, I'm not an accountant and I haven't seen the finances to say for definite but these things give me hope:
- They have been true to their word. Where mistakes have been made they have been as open and honest about it as they can.
- They are successful businessmen
- They have tried to address the historical debt and hopefully will succeed shortly
- They are looking at increasing revenues outside of selling off talent
And, when it boils down to it, what choice do we have? None of us are zillionaires and if we went on a campaign to oust the current regime based on heresay and internet rumour, where would that leave us? My mind immediately goes toward Fratton Park and Ibrox.
So, to sum up my ramblings - yes, while the debt still exists it will always be a concern but it seems that, on the face of it, we have solid benefactors (the colour change for me was NEVER an issue) who have so far delivered on (or seemingly in the process of) what they have promised and, frankly, given that we are not financial experts ourselves, why bite the hand that feeds you when it is offering so much?
Phew. Didn't really mean to write that much...

Malaysians walk away now we are finished. They spend £50mill more and walk away in 2 years we are still finished. Nothing we can do about it. No point in worrying -enjoy the ride.

Agreed, £40m or £80m debt - it will make little difference if the s..t hits the fan. It's a gamble for VT, and we can enjoy the benefits without the risk.

Worrying about things is a pointless waste of time and energy. There are things in our lives that we can influence and things that we cannot. For those things you can do something about, do something. For those things you can't, enough said. The malaysians have some creditable history as far as business goes, I have nothing to offer them in that department, so I guess I'll just enjoy the ride. And at the end of the day it is a game, and there will always be far more important things in all of our lives.

We have not overspent, if you compare our spending with our rivals. Most of our player acquisitions have also been investments.
Vincent Tan clearly has a business plan, and an idea to take us forward. He has even consulted with Jose Mourinho.
Just relax and enjoy the ride. At the end of the day, if it all goes tits up you won't have lost one penny

It does not matter to me.
If Cardiff go bankrupt there is another team down West I can support already in the Premiership thankfully...

Put simply, the Malaysians have everything to gain by our success and everything to lose by our failure. It's in everyone's interests that this club succeeds. Apart from maybe the ruggerbuggers.

Why would VT simply pull out? He pretty much owns the club. He is currently loaning the club the money to go forward, if it doesn't succeed, and decided he wanted to walk away, then the club would owe VT say roughly £20+ plus the Langston debt would still be owed to Hammam. If he were to 'pull out' and the club went out of business, there would be no administration as there would be no one willing to take on the club in such a position, we would go bust, and he would lose everything he invested (as would Hammam). Not to mention the embarrassment it would cause him in his own country.
As I said before, if that happened we would lose our club, but VT has plenty to lose himself.
