Two new signings in Jordon Mutch and Etien Velikonja, potential signings in Craig Bellamy and Kim Bo-Kyoung. All four are clearly quality players. But do they give us any clues as to the formation that MM will employ next season.
Many City fans clamour for the club to sign a couple of speedy wingers and a targetman. As yet, this does not seem to be the way Malky sees it. My own feeling is that he will employ the 4-5-1 or the 4-3-3 system with Bellamy and Bo-Kyoung playing in the wide positions, Etien Velikonja as the lone striker with Mutch and Gunnarson playing a holding role in midfield. Any views on the formation?

I think Malky tried to play with a quite fluid style of play last season (when we were at our best in October/November. Unfortunately as we tired it all went a bit pair shaped. I think this year he is giving himself plenty of options so he can affect games. I still think there will be a few more additions and this is the most excited i've been about watching the city for a long time.
Lets be honest some of the games towards the end of last season were dreadful and we looked like we had no options.
this season with the new additions and hopefully the emergence of kadeem we'll have plenty of game changers, not just whitts!

4-3-3 I believe is definetely the way to go, with it shifting to a 4-5-1 when defending. The front 3 would be exactly as you said phil, with one winger carrying the ball into danger areas while the striker and other winger prep to recieve. I'd then have Whittingham join the attack from midfield as he's proficient with his long shots and could happily tuck a rebound away. Mutch and Gunarrson hold the fort in midfield, with our two wingbacks joining them for as long as we have the ball.
In defence, Etien would hang onto the last defender ready to jump on a long counterattack ball.

If we're gonna succeed a 3-6-4-5 may the best option and just hope they all get in the way... or alternatively rope them altogether on 4 equidistant long poles running the width of the pitch and have Malky running up and down the touch line twisting the poles to create chances.... No 'spinning' allowed

I totally agree with you. The style of play early last season was good to watch but at time in the new year it was one dimensional. I'm also excited about the coming season and for somebody of my age it's a rarity these days!thehumblegringo wrote:I think Malky tried to play with a quite fluid style of play last season (when we were at our best in October/November. How did you come to that conclusion considering we just spent two million on a striker? Haha.
No one ever could or ever will understand Howe much I hate Spains football.

The strikers are there to confuse the opposition and as a resource to change formation if required.

Keeping two fast players up on the the halfway line (at both ends) will stop the opposition coming forward in numbers.
